The additional skills, knowledge, and extended depth limit allow you to explore deeper Koh Tao dive sites than you do on beginner courses, meaning you’ll see bigger fish - and lots more marine life in general

PADI ADVANCED OPEN WATER COURSE: OVERVIEW

Please note that you need to be a certified diver already to enrol. Not yet qualified and want to learn to dive on Koh Tao? Then check out our Open Water Diver course for more details.

You only need 2 days to complete your advanced diving course on Koh Tao. But if you have more time, why not stick around a bit longer? Each adventure dive counts as the first dive of the corresponding PADI Specialty Course. So, it’s not uncommon for students to get hooked and stay for more. You might even find yourself becoming a Rescue Diver or signing up to Go Pro!

During your training, you’ll complete five thrilling adventure dives, get certified to dive to 30 metres, perfect your buoyancy, and try exciting new activities like wreck diving, night diving, and underwater navigation.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

Like most Koh Tao diving certifications, the Advanced Open Water Diver course comprises a mix of interactive classroom sessions, some skills practice, and some fantastic open water ocean dives.

Knowledge Development

The best thing about the advanced course is that it’s more heavily focused on diving than academics. There’s no videos or final exam. Just a short theory session with your instructor at our Koh Tao dive shop in the heart of Sairee, using official PADI training materials.

Each adventure dive has a chapter in the manual. Your instructor will review them with you, making sure you have ample opportunities to ask questions. And, of course, we’ll squeeze in some time to tell you all about the next exciting PADI diving courses you can take!

Open Water Dives

At FIFTY SIX DIVE, we’ve designed our Koh Tao diving trips and courses to be as fun and hassle-free as possible. Your adventure dives are spread over 2 days so you don’t get too tired. Our dive centre on Koh Tao is located right on the beachfront, so there’s no better view to kickstart your days of diving.

There are several electives on the Advanced Open Water Diver course, although the deep and navigation dives are mandatory. The idea is to introduce you to some of the different types of diving you can do in various locations worldwide. However, to show you the very best that Koh Tao diving has to offer, we recommend the combination below.

Peak Performance Buoyancy Dive - Get all the best tips and tricks for achieving perfect trim. Hang motionless like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible and improve your air consumption at the same time!

Navigation Dive - Ever wondered how dive pros always know where they are underwater and can find the boat at the end of each dive? It’s time to unlock the secrets of underwater navigation.

Night Dive - See the coral reefs in a whole new light (literally!). Sounds a little scary, we know. But most students who take their advanced diving course on Koh Tao say this is their favourite dive.

Deep Dive - We’ll teach you how to plan and execute deeper dives safely, and show you what happens to colours and the effects of pressure at depth (let’s see if you get nitrogen narcosis!).

Wreck Dive - Koh Tao scuba students are very lucky because we have a small piece of history to explore just a couple of miles from the shoreline - the sunken naval shipwreck of the WW2 vessel, HTMS Sattakut.

PADI ADVANCED DIVER SCHEDULE

While weather conditions sometimes affect our schedule, here’s a typical example of what you can expect from your advanced diving course on Koh Tao with FIFTY SIX DIVE:

DAY 1

The first day begins at 10am with a course orientation. You’ll meet your group and your instructor, go over the course schedule, and fill in some PADI paperwork. You might even get a headstart on some knowledge development chapters.

In the afternoon, you’ll complete 2 of the shallower dives on the course, Peak Performance Buoyancy and Navigation. In the evening, you’ll discover the wonder of the reef at night as the daytime marine life goes to sleep and the nocturnal fish emerge. A truly unique Koh Tao scuba diving experience! So don’t worry about first-time nerves - this will likely be your favourite dive.

DAY 2

Day two starts with an early morning for our 6.30am boat departure. But diving down to 30 metres and exploring the amazing HTMS Sattakut shipwreck will soon wake you up!

When the boat returns to shore at lunchtime, you’ll have a break to grab some food before meeting back up to review any remaining theory, fill in your logbooks, and complete your PADI paperwork. Then it’s time for a few well-earned drinks to celebrate completing your advanced scuba diving course on Koh Tao!
